Ken Jones Trophy

On the 29th May we held the third Ken Jones Trophy to celebrate one of our past members, again Mark Mathias (nephew) was in attendance to watch the proceedings and award the trophy to the winner. We had a very good entry of approx 48 prints all on the theme of Monochrome/B&W. Our judge for the night was Rob Mitchell who gave a sterling critique and the outstanding winner was John Ellis with a wonderful shot from the Himalayas.

Cardiff Photomarathon 2013

Recently a couple of members entered the annual Photomarathon in Cardiff, this is an event where you have to take 12 images over a 12 hour period based on 12 themes issued in groups of 4 at 10am, 2pm and 6pm. Then return before 10pm to download your 12 images, which must be in the right order on your card (12 only).
The themes were
1.Entry number/Who am I
2. Poetry
3. Asymmetric
4. Space
5. Out and about
6. Behind the Scenes
7. Animated
8. A bit on the Side
9. Shadow
10. Mixed Message
11. Elegant
12. Another Perspective
Needless to say this taxed the brain considerably, but the weather was great and just over 400 entrants were busy trawling Cardiff and its surrounding area for inspirational images. The exhibition in Cardiff starts on 22nd June at the old library building opposite St Davids Hall and runs until 7th July.

Photomarathon has a Flickr site where some of the entrants have posted there photo’s http://www.flickr.com/groups/2228338@N23/“.

Maybe next year some more members might like to try it, its tiring but worth the effort.

Club Outing 1st April Britton Ferry and Neath

Last Bank Holiday was the latest club outing and attended by about 15 members in 4 cars. First we went to Britton Ferry and walked along the estuary to the end where the old pipelines are, then it was back to McDonalds for a quick refreshment before moving on to the old lighthouse ship in the river near Neath, what a sight and lovely textures for HDR imaging as can already be seen on the Facebook page. But for those who have not seen them hear are a few to ponder over.

Oh and by the way we nearly lost our President when he was about to be locked behind bars when the security closed the gates behind us at Neath.

Awards Dinner 2013

Our Carmarthenshire ‘Ivor Russell Trophy’ 2013

Last week we had the annual Ivor Russell trophy, which represents prints taken in Carmarthenshire in honour of Ivor Russell. In attendance was Mrs Russell together with her son and daughter. After an introduction by our president Ray Rees the judge Nick Jenkins began his critique of the 16 prints submitted, this was a slightly reduced number based on the previous 3 years we have been running this competition, however the quality of the entries made up for this.

After a very good critique by Nick we had an excellent buffet supplied by the members after which the winners were announced. As this is a special one of trophy only the winner is given recognition, however the top six were indicated on the night and it was a close run thing as Nick pointed out.

The eventual winner was Jason Dale with his ‘Machyns Sunset’. Above is a picture of the presentation to Jason with Nick Jenkins on the left and Mrs Russell presenting the trophy on the right.

Ace of Prints 2013

On the 7th July the WPF held an inaugural print competition to choose the two clubs who would represent the WPF in the National finals at Connaughs Quay in October, this choice would normally be made from the Salon entry, which we won this year but the WPF chose to create this new event for the selection process.

As I was on holiday Graham and Jay attended and made the necessary selections for the second round after the selection committee had chosen the 1st round entry prior to the competition. The club entry had to be 12 prints for round 1 consisting of at least 5 B&W (Monochrome) and 5 colour with no more than 3 Natural History. In round 2 it was 15 prints with the same criteria although images from round 1 could be used again dependant on there 1st round score.

After round 1 we were in =7th position from the 11 clubs that took part, after the final round 2 we ended up in =5th place, with Inn Focus on top and Tenby second. Both these clubs go forward to represent the WPF in October.

Round 1 Entry: Night Bus Graham 12pts, Village Girl Joyce 12pts, Holy Island Clive 12pts, Village Matron Peter F 12pts, Morning Mist Arthur 11pts, Material Girl Steve 11pts, Mr Calford Graham 10pts, Captured by her Eyes Joyce 10pts, All that Jazz Jo 10pts, Welder David R 10pts, Blue Green Yellow Clive 10pts and Shepherd in Rajastan Joyce 10pts

Sospan Trophy Result

Before the club closed for the summer we held our annual ‘Sospan Trophy’ event. A battle between ourselves, Amman Valley, Carmarthen, Pembrey, Tenby and Trostre.

All the clubs entered 6 projected images and the judge was Liegh Woolford, after the first 3 rounds we were 2pts clear of Tenby in. We then had a break and as usual a good spread was provided by the members. Once all the images were shown we came out triumphant with 113pts

  • ‘Holy Island’ by Clive Martin
  • ‘Misty Morning’ by Arthur Mallett
  • ‘The Last Bus’ by Graham Harries

WPF Memorial Trophy 2014 Result

Following last Sunday judging of the Memorial Trophy, I can now reveal the full results. It ended up with another win for Inn Focus, closely followed by Cardiff CC. Our entry was 4 prints by Arthur, John, Steve and Jennifer with ‘Double Header’ 16pts, ‘Amphu Labsta Pass’ 15pts, ‘Soul Taker’ 18pts and ‘Grounded’ 19pts respectively. That left us in 5th place points wise and =8th overall on count back with several other clubs. The total number of clubs entered was 24, the judge was Tony Dudley from the West Mids a current member of the prestigious club Smethwick.

The scoring was difficult as the judge had not seen the images beforehand even though they were delivered before Christmas. He initially did the critique on them all then scored them after the break holding back 25 images for final scoring, which were then done in no particular order so keeping the score sheet up to date was a bit of a nightmare. Only one image ended up with 20pts and that was a Kingfisher print from Inn Focus.

Final positions were, Inn Focus 74pts, Cardiff’ 72pts, Cymbran, Ebbw Vale and The Vale 71pts, Tenby and Towy Valley 69pts and then 6 clubs on 68pts inc Llanelli
