Stanley Chell comp approx 20-25 clubs enter annually, where 4 prints are entered with at least 1 Landscape. This takes place on 23rd November
Saturday 2nd November was the 2013 Gwynfa Pixels competition held by Gwynfa CC at Talbot Green. there were a total of 36 clubs entered, just one short of the record. So we were in good company, with clubs from all over the WPF Federation area as well as clubs from North Wales. The judges were Gwen and Phil Charnock from ex Wigan Ten fame (twice World dpi Champions)
Our entry consisted of 4 images as mentioned in the previous blog, one by Joyce, one by Steve, one by Jennifer and one by David Rees. They scored 16pts, 15pts, 20pts and 15pts respectively. Jennifers image ‘Ashes to Ashes’ then went through to be judged against another 5/20pts scores for best Colour Image (3 of which were from Inn Focus) and WON. The photo below was taken of myself receiving the trophy on behalf of Jennifer by the two judges.
Our eventual position was =6th, which is our best score in the last 5 years of the event and confirms our standing as one of the top 5 clubs in the WPF. This is a position we have maintained over that period even though major competition has come from new emerging clubs such as Inn Focus etc

This is one of the two annual events held by Amman Valley CC. The other in June is a 6way Battle. The clubs entered were Amman Valley, Carmarthen and ourselves. The competition is split into two halves the first being 8 prints and the second half 8 dpi images. At the end of round 1 we were in the lead by 3pts from Carmarthen, after the second round, which we also won by 4pts again from Carmarthen. We came out victors with a total of 287pts from Carmarthen 280pts and AV 262pts. The competition was judged by Roy Thomas from Neath.

Last Saturday was the last of the 2013 external competitions entered by LPS. There were a total of 27 clubs entered again from across the WPF area. It was judged over 4 rounds (prints) by Martin Fry from Cheltenham. After the first two rounds we were =3rd, after 3 rounds we were =2nd and at the end came away with a very credible =3rd position behind Gwynfa and Inn Focus Group.
Our entry consisted of 4 prints, ‘Holy Island’ by Clive Martin 18pts, ‘Paper Chase’ by Jennifer Williams 16pts, ‘A Drink from Grandma’ by Joyce Mollet 17pts and ‘The Bird Cage’ by Steve Milton 16pts. These scores may seem a little low but the overall judging was very fair and went from as low as 11pts to the max of 20pts, although there were only two 20pts scored in the whole competition.
Tredegar walked away with the best B&W, Swansea with best Colour, Bridgened with best Landscape and Inn Focus with best image overall. There were trophies for all these categories.
The winning club for the actual ‘Stanley Chell Trophy’ was Gwynfa 69pts, second was Inn Focus with 68pts and Llanelli/Towey Valley =3rd with 67pts. So again we came in the top three of 27 clubs

Monday night was the annual Brian Jennings Trophy hosted by Trostre CC. Our entry was ‘Ashes to Ashes’ by Jennifer Williams (20pts), ‘Misty Morning’ by Arthur Mallett (17pts), ‘Severn Sunset’ by Clive Martin (19pts), ‘A Drink from Grandma’ by Joyce Mollet (20pts) and ‘Blue Tit’ by David Rees (19pts).
As usual Trostre provided an excellent night with the usual superb buffet, it was well attended by all the clubs entered (8) and to cap it all we came away with our first WIN of the year beating Tenby by just 1 point. The judge was Roy Thomas and each club entered 5 prints. Interestingly Tenby beat us by 1pt last year!
The final results were
Llanelli 95pts, Tenby 94pts, Carmarthen 89pts, Towy Valley 89pts, Abertawe 87pts, Trostre 86pts, Pembrey/Bury Port 85pts and Amman Valley 82pts
Well done to all that were selected and thanks go to all the members who attended from Llanelli making it a very enjoyable night.
Following last Sunday judging of the Memorial Trophy, I can now reveal the full results. It ended up with another win for Inn Focus, closely followed by Cardiff CC. Our entry was 4 prints by Arthur, John, Steve and Jennifer with ‘Double Header’ 16pts, ‘Amphu Labsta Pass’ 15pts, ‘Soul Taker’ 18pts and ‘Grounded’ 19pts respectively. That left us in 5th place points wise and =8th overall on count back with several other clubs. The total number of clubs entered was 24, the judge was Tony Dudley from the West Mids a current member of the prestigious club Smethwick.
The scoring was difficult as the judge had not seen the images beforehand even though they were delivered before Christmas. He initially did the critique on them all then scored them after the break holding back 25 images for final scoring, which were then done in no particular order so keeping the score sheet up to date was a bit of a nightmare. Only one image ended up with 20pts and that was a Kingfisher print from Inn Focus.
Final positions were, Inn Focus 74pts, Cardiff’ 72pts, Cymbran, Ebbw Vale and The Vale 71pts, Tenby and Towy Valley 69pts and then 6 clubs on 68pts inc Llanelli

This coming Sunday 26th January Rhondda CC are hosting the annual Memorial Trophy on behalf of the WPF, the venue is Maes y Haf, Trealaw, Rhondda, CF40 2UB. It starts at 2.00pm. The judge is Tony Dudley from Midland Counties Photographic Federation.
How to get to Maes y Haf Community Hall from Junction 34 of the M4 at Miskin
Take the A4119 at Talbot Green towards Tonyrefail/Rhondda. Continue through 7 roundabouts.
At 8th roundabout take 3rd exit on B4278 towards Penygraig At next roundabout take 2nd exit, still on B4278.
Continue approx 1 mile to T-junction, then right on B4058 towards Porth.
After about 200 yards, turn left over railway bridge and bear left to top of hill.
The Royal pub should be in front of you. Turn right onto the main road.

The winner of this year’s Dave Roberts Memorial Competition on the theme of “Nautical” was Netley Davies. This year’s competition was judged by Nick Jenkins.

‘Holy Island’ by Clive Martin, WELL DONE CLIVE
I entered Wales in the 27th PDI Biennial held in Luxembourg.
It`s not easy to pick the images as you have to have a title for the entry and each image must match the title and form a cohesive group within that topic. You get marks for each image, marks for how it matches the title and a ‘Coherence’ mark for how the entry all fits together. You`d be amazed at how you can often end up with 17 great images that match really well but sadly you need 20! Choosing the title is also difficult. I initially chose ‘Portraits’ but a mixture of colour and monochrome seemed odd and some had one person in and some two. It all seemed wrong, with not too much coherence. Eventually after much thought I went for ‘Emotions’ which allowed a mixture of tones and images in a better way. I tried to pick images with ‘expression’ but often what I thought was a very expressive image did not appeal to the judges!
We did very well however and came 6th overall. Brilliant! We were awarded an honourable mention and one member, Ian Ledgard, won a Bronze Medal as well.
Belgium won the world cup with 218 points, Italy were second with 207 points and we had 184 points. Each entrant will receive a disk with all entries on. They judge as all internationals out of 15, and any images that didn`t score 7 or over is sadly not included on the disk. The two top entries are fabulous.
Later this month 26th June we will hold the annual Sosban Trophy, we are the current holders and hope to retain the trophy. However several clubs will be trying to take it from us they are, Amman Valley, Carmarthen, Pembrey, Tenby and Trostre. Our entry has been chosen and they are:

Before the club closed for the summer we held our annual ‘Sospan Trophy’ event. A battle between ourselves, Amman Valley, Carmarthen, Pembrey, Tenby and Trostre.
All the clubs entered 6 projected images and the judge was Liegh Woolford, after the first 3 rounds we were 2pts clear of Tenby in. We then had a break and as usual a good spread was provided by the members. Once all the images were shown we came out triumphant with 113pts
