2013 A New Beginning

So a new year begins, our first meeting will be on 9th January when we will choose the winners for the best projected and best print from the 2012 winners. So if you were a winner be sure to bring your winning image in on the night otherwise you cannot be considered for the honour.

It will also be hand in for the first print comp of the year, so don’t forget those entries especially the new members.

As a reminder for all members the deadline for anyone who wishes to enter the WPF Salon will be around 3rd week of February as the entry has to be in by the WPF AGM held in early March.
All details can be found on the WPF web site including entry forms costs etc

Brian Jennings Trophy 2013

On Monday 14th January we had the first external Competition of the year at Trostre CC. We were the defending winners from last year so our expectations were high.
There were 8 clubs competing, Amman Valley, Abertawe, Carmarthen, Pembrey, Tenby, Towy Valley, Trostre and ourselves.
5 Prints from each club and the Judge was Rob Mitchell, after the first 3 rounds we were even with Tenby on 52pts, so it was all down to the last two prints we scored 17 and 20pts and Tenby scored 18 and 20pts. So we lost by just 1pt to our old rivals Tenby.
Over the last 4 years I think we have shared the trophy with Tenby only breaking their run last year.

So well done to our entrants, especially Clive for his 20pts

‘Firestarter’ by Graham Harries 17pts
‘Her place is in the Home’ by Joyce Mollet 19pts
‘Cheeky Beggar’ by Tony Collis 16pts
‘Me Myself and I’ by Jennifer Williams 17pts
Holy Island‘ by Clive Martin 20pts

Overall placings were:
1st Tenby 90pts
2nd Llanelli 89pts
3rd Carmarthen 82pts
=4th Amman Valley 81pts
=4th Abertawe 81pts
=4thTowy Valley 81pts
=4th Trostre 81pts
8th Pembrey 77pts

WPF Memorial Trophy 2013

Yesterday was the annual WPF Memorial trophy, hosted again this year by ourselves at the Selwyn Samuel Centre Llanelli.
23 clubs entered this year and the judge Ken Holland based in Teighnmouth was from the Western Counties Federation. His scoring was certainly refreshing where scores varied between 5 and 20pts, this made for a very interesting critique (maybe more judges should follow his lead)
One club scored 3 x 20pt prints but still did not win, which shows how a more varied scoring can effect the end result.

Each club had 4 prints entered and ours were
Lonely Road by Arthur Lees 16pts
Silence of the iPad by Jennifer Williams 12pts
The Sadhus by Gary Martin 12pts
Clowning Around by Steve Milton 17pts

This left us in 6= place at the end with guess who taking the spoils yet again yes you’ve guessed it Tenby with 72pts (know 20’s either)
2nd place went to 3 clubs Bridgend, Cardiff and Inn Focus (last years winners).

Thanks must go to all the members who turned up on the morning to help with the set up and all those who managed to support the club during the afternoon judging. Also thanks to the local dignitaries who also graced us with their presence.

Not to mention the photographers who recorded the event for posterity? you know who you are. I am sure there will be some memorable images of the day to follow!

Club Outing Bury Port

Yesterday we had a small outing to Bury Port organised and led by Gary. The day started with Gary giving a class on aperture and speed settings and there relevance when taking photos. This was done in the sand with his trusty umberella.

Here are a few images from the day enjoyed by those who attended

Ace of Clubs 2013 Results

Yesterday was the 2013 Ace of Clubs, thanks to Jackie and Peter Morgan for their company. This competition is quite long and complex because each club has to choose 30 images to work from over 3 rounds of judging.
Round 1 is chosen at the time the entry is made, after the judging for round 1 we were in a lowly 14th place out of 17 clubs, so we then had to choose another 10 images for round 2 this time we came out 7th, however this was not good enough to get us in the top 8 clubs for the final as we ended up cumulatively in 11th place and 9 clubs on count back went through.
So it was left to us to contest the Plate competition, for this we had to pick another 8 images 5 of which could be used again, at the end of this judging we were second to Western Valley.
The eventual overall winners were yet again Tenby with Inn Focus in second, because Inn Focus had automatic entry to the National Finals in July at Warwick (due to there top ten place last year) a second club was chosen and they were Ebbw Vale.
In case you were wondering, each year the top two clubs go forward to represent the WPF at the National Finals for dpi images, a similar event will take place in June to choose the two clubs for the Print equivalent. That National final is held in Chester and we were one of the representatives about 5 years ago
There is one major observation from this competition and that is that we were very let down by a lack of Natural History or Nature photos, nearly all the top clubs had at least 3/4 images in this category all of which scored highly 13-15pts (max 15pts)
This is an area we always fall down on, so come on guys and girls lets see some images!

WPF Salon 2013

I have just finished collating the entry for this years Salon, unfortunately it is the smallest entry yet since I have been doing it.

There were a total of 10 members entered, with 30 Colour prints, 12 Monochrome and 16 digital. This meant that we could not enter the digital club competition as we did not have enough members entering (4) six are needed to pick a selection from. So we are only entered in the 6 print club competition.

Keep your eyes peeled for the results, some time in late March/early April

PAGB Inter Federation Print Exhibition – Big Pit – October 21st to November 17th 2013

The WPF is once again arranging for the Annual PAGB Inter Federation Print Exhibition to be exhibited in our area – as we have done for many years, it is part of our intention to expose our Members to the best of British Photography whenever we can. It does rely on us being able to acquire a suitable venue and support from local Camera Clubs. This year we have arranged for the Exhibition to be hosted at the Big Pit on the dates shown above, you will have seen in a recent Newsflash details of the 34 prints we have selected as the WPF entry in this year’s event.

However as well as the appeal for help to erect the stands and hang the Exhibition on October 18th/19th and dismantle on November 18th the Big Pit management have advised that: – “We should not leave the Exhibition unattended but that we should arrange to steward whenever the Exhibition is open; that covers the period Monday October 21st to Sunday 17th November. This is because they have found over the last couple of years that vandalism and general misbehaviour has increased substantially”

To this end we are hoping to find volunteers from the WPF Clubs to provide us with 2 people on duty at any one time, to allow for breaks, so I am asking – well in advance – for anyone who can spare half or a full day to contact me as below so that we can see if we can put together a ROTA to cover the requirements – i.e. 25 days in total.”

Amman Valley Battle Results

We are now on 5th June and the 5 way battle at Amman Valley, Ray and myself were there to fly the flag for LPS and it was a successful night coming away with a win. The judge was Kevin Thomas who gave a very fair and detailed critique. The entry was as follows

  • Arthur Mallett ‘Misty Morning’ 16pts

  • Joyce Mollet ‘A Village Girl’ 17pts

That gave us a total of 134pts in 1st place with Neath in 2nd with 130pts and Amman Valley in 3rd with 128pts. Well done to Clive for his 20pts score and thanks to all who were selected to represent LPS
